What is Artificial Intelligence?
Informative Speech

Have you guys watched the movie A.I.? Have you been impressed by those robots’ extraordinarily cool and special skills? Have you imagined such a cool scene would become part of our lives in the future? Let me tell you that in this room, the majority of us are now enjoying the fruit of the development of Artificial Intelligence, or AI. Yes, AI is already in our lives now.
Well, what is artificial intelligence? Artificial Intelligence, a subject of computer science, tries to establish intelligent systems by machines instead of humans. Generally, AI is used to describe the machines which can “cognitively” imitate humans’ minds in learning and problem-solving (Akl and Salay 6). Selim G Akl and Nancy Salay, the authors of Artificial Intelligence A Promising Future?, described the uses of AI: “The advent of self-driving cars, speech-activated automated assistants, and data analytics more generally has transformed every sector of society.” AI contributes effectively and helps to reshape the fields like health care, business, transportation, education, and entertainment (Akl and Salay 6).
How far are we reaching now in the progress of developing AI? The answer suggested by Akl and Salay is shocking: “the field is about a decade ahead of where we thought it would be at this time, with advances proceeding at an exponential rate.”
Is this a problem? Many people are concerned about the fast-developing rate, and the reliance on this intelligence may hurt people’s real practices. Sure, sure, people will do that --- work less, think less, and contribute less. Even worse, maybe a lot of people have imagined the scene that AI destroys the entire human working system and becomes the leading power of the world. Thanks to those tremendously exaggerative movies, the fear of AI arose spontaneously within the public.
However, AI, the sign of era transformation, brings many different sorts of benefits to humans. Chris Duffey and Aime Duffey claim in their article “More than human: Artificial intelligence is set to change everything”, that “AI can help generate and test hundreds of variations of prototypes for businesses; it can customize learning curriculums based on students’ individual preferences, and it can diagnose rare diseases.” The application of AI is rather broad. Besides those benefits mentioned by Duffey, AI enables farmers to promote agriculture by using data analytics – weather and soil – to improve crop yields; AI is also glittering in healthcare to ensure the care and patient satisfaction (Hirsch 62). In general, AI has countless potential to create a brand new world for humans.
AI is a tool created by men to work more efficiently in different areas, but there are many controversies – threats or benefits. All in all, let’s not overly concerned about AI’s threats and ignore the benefits of AI in different professional fields. Last but not least, let’s consider and engrave the fact said by Paul Daugherty, the author of “Revisiting the Jobs Artificial Intelligence Will Create”, that “Whether we cheer it or fear it, artificial intelligence has landed hard on the organizational doorstep, and its arrival as a business technology has generated a whole lot of noise.”

This source mainly introduces the concept of Artificial Intelligence in a general phase and interprets the reasons for the AI explosion. In the article, the author specifically analyses the fears brought by AI and the comments on these negative influences; the author also suggests the potential developmental of AI in the future. This source is important since it will give me a broad notion of AI and help me realize its current circumstances. The more crucial thing is AI’s future developmental fields, which are described in the article. I will have a clear orientation to do more research on each field from the business perspective.

In this source, the interview provides much specific information about the jobs’ variation within the development of Artificial Intelligence, and Daugherty also suggests many useful views to business leaders, cautioning them about AI in the future. This source is significant and useful because it includes interviews from two experts who gathered the amount of research among current companies that adopt the application of AI; Daugherty additionally analyses the importance of employing four soft skills in competitive marketing. I can know more about the careers’ variations and the jobs which will be crucial in the companies which mainly research on AI field, and I would understand the future focus on developing AI or the necessity to transform the old scheme to the new one.

This source states the current broad concerns about Artificial Intelligence. Then the authors mainly explain the three essential levels of AI: the narrow one, the general one, and the super one. To elaborate on these three levels of AI, the authors adopt specific examples. The authors additionally try to eliminate the fears of AI among people; they also debate the relationship between humanity and AI. This source is helpful because it reveals more about the concerns on AI, and the clarification to help eliminate these fears of AI is distinctive and effective, so I will be able to interpret AI’s function and status more clearly.

This source illustrates both the fears and benefits of Artificial Intelligence; it also analyses the reasons for the reputation risk of AI. The author mainly associates the concerns on the privacy and ethical problems with the reputation risk; he also suggests the methods companies can use to reduce the risks. This source is important because it helps me to comprehend the current concerns about AI, and the way to justify its reputation risk. I will be able to adopt these methods for analyzing AI’s value, which is mostly applied in the business field.
